European businesses must manage the dynamics of innovation, according to a recently published report by the European Commission. The report, "Building an Innovative Economy in Europe", reviews a number of trends in European innovation policy, and their impact on business competitiveness and growth. To survive and thrive in the knowledge-driven economy and to cope with the fast-changing realities of globalisation and international competition, European Union enterprises must not only be open to innovation, but also make the most of it, the report states. No company can afford to stand still: innovation is key to success in the marketplace. The Commission reports that although EU businesses are doing well, they could do a lot better, particularly in the area of the e-economy. Each year, the European Commission launches a number of studies in the field of innovation, to shed light on specific aspects of interest to policy-makers. The 2001 report "Building an Innovative Economy in Europe", summarises the findings of 12 of these studies, the first in a series of Innovation Policy Studies. The report on these studies is published by the Official Publications Office of the European Community and on the Commission website: http://www.cordis.lu/innovation-smes/src/studies.htm.
