Dutch nutritional products giant Royal Numico recently reported an increase in first quarter sales of 34.6 per cent to EUR 1,069 million (excluding the Dairy & Drinks Group). Sales in infant nutrition grew 7.5 per cent to EUR 235 million with strong performance in Southern and Eastern Europe and steady growth in Northern and Central Europe. For the sector Clinical Nutrition and Diet the group saw an increase of 17 per cent to EUR 109 million and noted the growth in particular of the clinical dietary supplements and the metabolic disease range of products. Despite the total US supplements market showing an overall decline, sales for the Diets and Sports and Vitamins and Herbs sector rose a giant 54.3 per cent to EUR 687 million, including acquisitions. The decline in the Vitamins & Herbs category was compensated by the continuing growth in the consumer Diets and Sports segment. In a statement Numico reaffirmed its earlier announced sales growth expectations for the year 2001 of 15 per cent, excluding the Dairy & Drinks group. Numico announced the final dividend to be paid will amount to EUR 0.53.
