China has become the number one vegetable and fruit producer in the world today, producing 13.3 per cent of the fruit and 65.7 per cent of the vegetables around the globe in 2000, says Liu Jian, deputy minister of theMinistry of Agriculture, Chinaonline reports this week. The total output value of fruit and vegetables exceeded 350 billion yuan (US$42.27 billion) for 2000, according to a report in the April 5 Zhongguo Xinxi Bao (China Information News). The area in China cultivated in vegetables for the year 2000 accounted for 35.3 per cent of the total area cultivated in vegetables around the world. The area in China cultivated in fruit accounted for 18 per cent of the total area cultivated in fruit around the world, the article said. Exported fruit levels reached 1.36 million tons, and foreign-exchange earnings reached US$720 million. The export volume increased by 14.3 per cent, whereas foreign-exchange earnings increased by 8.8 perc ent compared with the same period in 1999.
