Australia is to develop a national food industry policy to identify new areas of growth, the government announced this week. Agriculture Minister Warren Truss will head a committee comprising of horticulture, retailing and food processing industry leaders to develop a national food industry strategy. The Agriculture Minister pronounced that the strategy would be used to help the food processing sector find new markets, develop products and identify trends within the industry. Service industries such as transport, packaging, science and technology will also have input into the committee's report. "It is vital that the action agenda is developed in partnership with all sectors of the industry and state governments," Truss said in a statement."This will ensure the national food industry strategy is effective and achievable, and has the industry's full support."he continued. Truss added that the the emergence of global retailing and food processing chains was affecting the Australian food industry. The food industry is worth about $60 billion a year, with the food processing sectoremploying 165,000 people. Another 60,000 people are employed in the horticulturesector. The strategy, which will canvass both export and domestic opportunities, should be released towards the end of the year. Source: Industry Search
