Bestfood US Baking subsidiary, owned by Unilever, was yesterday sold for $1.76bn to unexpected contender Canadian George Weston. The acquisition will potentially allow Weston to increase its sales in the US by 100%. The Canadian food and supermarkets group, currently running 23 bakery plants in north America, will add Bestfood's 12,000 workforce and 19 plants to its effort to consolidate its baking strategy in the US. Unilever confirmed that Bestfood Baking, no longer fitted its strategy of operating in fewer sectors with fewer brands, is "a very strong business that happens to fall outside of our foods strategy to focus on leading brands in core categories, such as Lipton, Knorr, Slim-Fast and Hellmann's".
