Soya consumption on the increaseIncreasing consumer awareness of the health benefits of soya is boosting sales of the full range of soya products, reports ADM this week. A United SoybeanBoard survey this year revealed that 75 per cent of Americans believe that soya is healthy, up from 59 per cent in 1996. This leap in popularity is no doubt due to the recent health claims approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relating to soya. The FDA approval allows food manufactures to make the health claim on packaging that the consumption of 25 grams of soya protein per day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may help to reduce the risk of heart disease.
