Unions at the LU biscuit arm of French food group, Danone were up in arms on Thursday following leaked reports in the press that 12 European factories are to close with 3,000 (1700 in France) job losses. The CGT union, the largest in the biscuit branch of Danone, demanded an immediate meeting with the CCE, the Central Committee of Businesses. The FGA-CFDT claims that workers received no official information regarding the closures or redundancies and has called for strikes in all threatened 12 factories. According to Danone, at 7.3 per cent, the operational margin for their biscuit activities is the least profitable in the group in comparison to 12.7 per cent for drinks and 10.9 per cent for diary products.
