U.S.Wal-Mart, the world's largest retail group, is to set up a subsidiary inJapan ahead of opening a mega-store.The company is planning to open a 15,000 square metre store in 2002 and hasalready drawn up a shortlist of 10 proposed sites. Wal-Mart's decision followsthe entry into Japan earlier this month of Carrefour, the world's secondlargest retailer, and highlights the attraction of the Japanese market tooverseas companies. The French company plans to have a chain of 13 outletsin Japan by the end of 2003. Wal-Mart has 3,000 outlets in the US and about1,000 around the rest of the world.
