Consumer groups, the food industry and regulators in the U.K. launched theJoint Health Claims Initiative (JHCI) Code of Practise last week. The Code,backed by a panel of scientific experts, aims to ensure that health claims onfood are truthful and helpful for the consumer. Sir John Krebs, the U.K. FoodStandards Agency chairman commented, "I am delighted to welcome this importantstep forward on health claims. We know consumers want clear and accurateinformation on labels so they can make informed choices about their food." TheCode was written by the JHCI, a partnership developed by a number of groupsincluding the Consumers Association, the Food and Drink Federation and theProprietary Association of Great Britain.
