Organic food is becoming more popular in China and offering new opportunities for a sustainable development of agriculture, Asia Pulse reports. According to official statistics, the number of organic food producers in China increased from only 127 in 1990 to 742 by 1999, producing1,360 kinds of organic food, with an annual output reaching 10 million tons. The total output value of organic food producers reached 49.4 billion yuan in 1999; their annual sales volume, 30.2 billion yuan; and their annual export value, one billion yuan. China has established a quality standard system covering producing area, production procedure, product guarantee andspecial means of production, and issued the "Regulations on the Management of Organic Food Markets".
