Food companies Heinz North America and Hain Celestial announced this week the first fruits of their alliance formed in 1999 to develop products in the natural and organic segment of the food industry. The product, Great Awakenings Soymilk, claims to be a lactose and cholesterol-free food. In addition, according to the two companies, one 8-ounce serving of Great Awakenings provides 14% of the recommended daily protein and 30% of the recommended daily calcium. Four 8-ounce servings of Great Awakenings Soymilk are equivalent to 28 grams of soy protein. The US Food and Drug Administration has found that, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, 25 grams of soy protein daily lowers cholesterol and may reduce the risk of heart disease.
