As Canada develops national standards for the voluntary labelling of GM or non-GM foods the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada hosted a forum to discuss a variety of factors under consideration. A panel of experts from nutrition and food communities spoke about a range of issues touching regulatory changes. Attendees learnt that while the national surveys universally indicated that consumers are interested in becoming better informed about the genetic modification of food, analysts suggested that the issue is not always the first thought for Canadian consumers. Other issues, including the fat content of food, food safety and pesticide use in food production all ranked higher on lists of consumer concerns.
