A budget increase for the Scottish Food Standards Agency will boost the Agency's programme to ensure that Scottish consumers get safer, more nutritious food, the UK Food Standards Agency announced recently. Under Scottish Executive spending plans the budget for the Agency will rise from £3.7 million to £5.4 million over the next three years. A major programme to cut food poisoning in Scotland had already been announced before news of the increase. This followed an outbreak of Salmonella poisoning in Scotland over the summer, and the release of figures showing that almost a quarter of Scottish shops, restaurants and other food establishments had breached hygiene and safety regulations in 1999.To find out more www.foodstandards.gov.uk/scotland.htm
