New packaging technology could help meet the challenges of delivering safe food over the Internet, scientists informed a Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) food forum in Australia this week. They advised the forum about the development of electronic and chemical devices to warn consumers if food quality was at risk. Electronic chips and colour sensitive strips could inform the consumer about the change in quality of perishable foods. This new packaging would be particularly significant for food ordered over the Internet because it is moving outside the established cold supply chain. It would also allow manufacturers to monitor the quality of food in transit.
