China's food industry has fixed its development targets for the next five years, according to Asia Pulse. The sugar-refining industry will make efforts to raise product quality and increase product variety. It is predicted that by year 2005, the country's sugar output will hit 10 million tons. The ferment industry will step up equipment and technical renovation and spread closed cleaning production. The food additive industry will develop nutriment, sweetening preparation, antiseptic fresh-keeping preparation, high-grade spices and multi-functional food additive. By year 2005, the food additive output will hit 436,500 tons valued at 4.5 billion yuan and earning 445 million US dollars.Dairy firms will mainly develop yoghurt, pasteurised milk and dairy drinks with dairy product output reaching 800,000 tons. China's food processing industry generated 782.866 billion yuan (US$94.5 billion) in output value, 127.821 billion yuan in pretax profit and US$12.5 billion in export in 1999.
