The Dutch Government is to help Hungary set up a regional food safety centre near Budapest, according to Laurens Jan Brinkhorst Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries in the Netherlands. The Minister stated on a recent visit to Hungary that Hungarian food safety regulations were excellent however the main concern for the Netherlands and the European Union is that should Hungary join the EU in 2003 it might be surrounded by uncontrolled meat arriving from non-members. An international food safety agency in Hungary or elsewhere would help guarantee consumers in the EU and Hungary that the meat they purchase is safe.
