Agricultural innovator dies aged 95

Normal Borlaug, the Nobel prize-winning scientist credited with starting the ‘green revolution’ has passed away at the age of 95.

The green revolution refers to the development of biotech agriculture and high yield crops. Borlaug invented a high-yield dwarf wheat that boosted yields in Asian and South America, as it left the plant more energy to devote to growing a good head instead of a long stalk.

Says a BBC tribute: “The Green Revolution helped world food production more than double between 1960 and 1990 with Asia, Africa and Latin America in particular benefiting”.
