Obesity to weigh on NHS

07-Dec-2000

The National Health Service in the United Kingdom faces costs of up to £16bn over the next decade as a result of increasing obesity and related illness, according to a new study, Carlton Food Network reports. Academics at St Andrews University, Scotland said people in Britain are becoming fatter and knock-on health problems would result, putting added strain on NHS budgets. Mehran Zabhilloh, a health economist who compiled data as part of the study, told BBC Scotland's Frontline Scotland programme: ' As a nation we're going to become more obese, and we're going to present more and more problems such as diabetes. The NHS will have to deal with ever more increasing numbers of ill people as a result of being obese with a limited budget.'
