EFSA releases all data on Monsanto’s GM maize

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has made all data on Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) NK603 maize publically available via its website, following a high level of public interest.

The maize was at the centre of a much-debated study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology by Séralini et al. in September last year, which suggested a link between consumption of the maize and Roundup herbicide and increased cancer risk. EFSA rejected the study as inadequate and not scientifically sound.

“While the Authority has already made available these data upon specific request on several occasions, any member of the public or scientific community will now be able to examine and utilise the full data sets used in this risk assessment,” EFSA said.

EFSA said the publication was part of a drive toward greater transparency in risk assessment at the agency.

EFSA Executive Director Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle said: “Risk assessment is an evolving science and EFSA is always willing to review its past work should new robust science bring a new perspective to any of the Authority’s previous findings. With the launch of today’s initiative that aims to make data used in risk assessment publicly available, EFSA will help scientists from different areas of expertise develop research that can ultimately enrich academic literature and provide valuable new perspectives that can be included in risk assessments. This will make the conclusions of risk assessments even stronger when ensuring public health protection and further build confidence in EFSA’s work.”

The data on NK603 is available for download here .
