24-Sep-2001

Sweden said on Wednesday that there was a possiblility that two ill dairy cows found on a farm were the country's first cases of mad cow disease.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease, has yet to be found in Sweden. In a statement, the board of agriculture said that the farm had been sealed off, the cows slaughtered and their remains removed to the national veterinary institute for tests.

Preliminary results from those tests should be available on Thursday, with final results available within about two weeks.
