Avocados could help Hepatitis C sufferers

07-Feb-2001

The avocado fruit may help hepatitis C sufferers, new research suggests. Compounds in avocados appear to lessen the liver damage caused by hepatitis C.

Researchers at Shizuoka University, in central Japan, simulated the liver damage caused by hepatitis C in laboratory rats. Of 22 different fruits fed to the animals, avocados had the greatest beneficial effect, the BBC News reports.

Avocados are one of the richest sources of vitamin E and they also provide vitamin C, fibre, potassium and folate.

The fruit hasn't yet been tested in people with hepatitis, although studies are due to occur.
