A variety of calcium supplements exist that help meet our daily requirementsof calcium but which kind is the best? The Chicago Tribune reported this weekthat Dr. Howard Heller and colleagues at the University of Texas SouthwesternMedical Centre in Dallas studied 25 postmenopausal women in three phases. Theywere given single doses of Citracal (calcium citrate), OsCal (calciumcarbonate) or a placebo after a standardised breakfast. The results suggestthat people absorb calcium citrate better than calcium carbonate by a largemargin, affirming results of a study Heller conducted in 1999. Heller notedthat research he has seen comparing milk and calcium carbonate indicates thatmilk tends to be absorbed the same or better than calcium carbonate.
