According to some scientists in New York, vitamin E, acting as an antioxidant, can help prevent lung disease.

Eight researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo and from the U.S. Veterans Administration medical centre in Buffalo tested over l,600 people, comparing their antioxidant levels to how well their lungs functioned.

The tests considered several antioxidants, Vitamin E and another antioxidant found in oranges. It seemed they have an important role in lung health. Antioxidants combat free radicals, which can cause body damage including harming the lungs.

The Buffalo study has been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The authors wrote that "reduced pulmonary function is an important predictor of mortality in the general population."

"Our findings support the hypothesis that antioxidant vitamins may play a role in respiratory health," they wrote, and said that Vitamin E and b- cryptoxanthin, found in oranges, "appear to be stronger correlates of lung function than other antioxidants."
