‘Safe’ levels of Monsanto herbicide and GM crop linked to cancer

Long term exposure to even relatively low levels of Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup and a genetically modified resistant crop strain could result in a ‘greatly increased’ risk of tumors’ and premature death, according to new findings in rats.

The new findings are from the first long-term peer reviewed toxicity study into the health impact of a GM tolerant maize crop and the world’s most popular herbicide – Roundup.

Led by a team of French researchers, the two-year study reports that consumption of relatively low ‘safe’ levels of Monsanto’s genetically modified NK603 roundup tolerant maize – or indeed of the herbicide itself – resulted in significantly higher incidence of mammary tumours, kidney and liver damage, and premature death in laboratory rats.

“The results of the study presented here clearly demonstrate that lower levels of complete agricultural glyphosate herbicide formulations, at concentrations well below officially set safety limits, induce severe hormone-dependent mammary, hepatic and kidney disturbances,” said the authors, led by Dr Gilles-Eric Séralini from the University of Caen in France.

Séralini and his colleagues say the findings call into question the adequacy of the current regulatory process for genetically modified foods in Europe – which has been used to license all new industrial chemicals, pesticides and other ‘novel crops’ since the Second World War.

Study details

Séralini sand his colleagues explained that all current evidence on the safety of GM crop foods is based on 90-day feeding trials – which is the equivalent to late teenage years/early adulthood in a rat.

As a result, the new trial was designed to study any adverse long-term effects resulting from feeding rats on relatively low levels of the commercial GM maize NK603 and Roundup, both individually and combined. The study lasted approximately two years – thus covering the entire lifespan of the rats.

Doses of Roundup started within the range of levels permitted by regulatory authorities in drinking water and as chemical residues in GM feed, whilst doses of NK603 were consistent with those used in previous Monsanto studies, said the authors.

The study reports that even consumption of even the low levels regarded as safe by regulators resulted in serious health problems – but these only became apparent when the rats were older than 90 days. The first tumour was observed after 120 days, but Séralini revealed that the majority were only detected after 18 months.

“Similar degrees of pathological symptoms were noticed in this study to occur from the lowest to the highest doses suggesting a threshold effect,” said the authors.

They added that the findings correspond to levels ‘likely to arise’ from consumption or environmental exposure including the consumption of genetically modified crops or exposure to contaminated drinking water that falls within the authorized limits.

“The results of the study presented here clearly demonstrate that lower levels of complete agricultural glyphosate herbicide formulations, at concentrations well below officially set safety limits, induce severe hormone-dependent mammary, hepatic [liver] and kidney disturbances.”

A long time coming.

Posted by Brian Burgess,

Monsanto has dodged this issue for over 30 years. I used to work with the original creator of the glyphosate compound before he had to leave his job due to illness. Ron Crockett was his name. In the last 10 years there has been multiple reports of this happening to secondary non-targeted species in the foodchain. Monsanto has established that the base glyphosate composition is relatively safe (until the french now say thats even bad) but they are very secretive about the other ingredients in Roundup, the stuff that makes it stick to the plant during the rain, and turn brown in a few hours is what I would like them to run some further tests on before it is too late. Roundup = Breast Cancer.

Herbicides / all Chemicals

This is not only happening in Europe....the Europeans have been much more scrutinizing in this area for years. Restaurant Menus have to list any artificial ingredients in the food, right on the Menu. That is what I saw and was also told when traveling there.
If we are led to believe that only corn has herbicides or is Genetically Modified...THINK AGAIN! Our supermarkets are full of 'genetically modified EVERYTHING'. We need to realize that CANCER is a reaction of our body to foreign substances.... Our body is saying "this does not belong in here" and for some of us our cells 'go wild' in response. Some of us may have a more tolerant system and not react as adamantly to the 'invaders', although we all have cancer cells in our bodies. It is sad that everything comes down to Greed/ Money.....for that reason it will be almost impossible to control what herbicides, fertilizers etc. is sprayed onto our food sources, long-term affecting our soil, water and air. But....MONEY TALKS !!!! Even Antibiotics are wreaking havoc in our systems, IF we choose to take them when prescribed for "necessity"..... Then needing another "chemical" to counteract damage from the previous one!

Not surprised about this

Posted by DJ,

I get serious stomach pains and other symptoms from accidentally eating GMOs. My husband has started having hives after eating canola, and he has never had food allergies before.

I've always been allergic to corn and have to avoid it anyway. And I avoid the other GMOs too. It is impossible to avoid all traces of corn, because it is not properly labeled, and often not labeled at all. After reading how risky GM corn and Roundup has been found to be, I guess I should consider myself lucky to be allergic to corn. Other people may learn the hard way, that it may not be good for them, either. If GM corn and Roundup does all that to rats, what is it doing to people, pets and other animals. Think about it.
