A new European COST Action project (Foodborne Zoonosis: A Co-ordinated Food Chain Approach) has been set up to study and discuss aspects of Microbiological Risk Assessment (MRA) in detail, the Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association (CCFRA) reports.

The first phase of the project will be run over 2 years. The Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) and the CCFRA will be representing the UK along with government organisations.

Four Working Groups will study: Isolation, identification and typing methods; New and emerging foodborne pathogens; Quantitative foodchain risk assessment; and Survival of zoonotic pathogens along the foodchain

CCFRA will be involved with foodchain risk assessment, and will be one of the few organisations participating able to put the viewpoint of food manufacturers across. The first meeting in March 2002 will discuss: Exposure Assessment (the module of MRA of most direct relevance to food manufacturers); modelling primary production; and 'the consumer phase'.
