The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has appointed Guy Poppy, professor of ecology and director of interdisciplinary research at the University of Southampton, as its chief scientific adviser.
Poppy assumes his role in August and the FSA said he would play a critical role at the agency, helping it understand how scientific developments shape its work, and the strategic implications of possible changes.
As well as providing expert scientific advice and challenge to the FSA, it said Poppy would work with the Scientific Advisory Committees (SACs), ensuring they continued to give sound independent scientific advice to the FSA.

“I can’t think of anything more important that ensuring food safety and standards,” said Poppy. “Food is essential for human wellbeing and the increasingly complex food system brings benefits and risks to our daily lives.”
Poppy has significant research experience in food systems and food security and has advised governments around the world on these issues.
He has also published over 100 peer-reviewed papers on topics such as risk assessment, risk analysis and risk communication. He is a member of the REF2014 panel assessing the quality of UK agriculture, food and veterinary science.
