A two-day symposium this week in the US, entitled "Food Irradiation and Packaging for Irradiated Food, " is tackling the issues currently facing this controversial food area.
Topics under the spotlight include: changes in meat flavour, colour and smell, antioxidant increases in fruit juices, migration of components from packaging into food products, new packaging materials used in irradiation, evaluation of packages containing irradiated meals for astronauts, and irradiation's effects on items sent through the mail.
The symposium, to include presentations by scientists from Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Japan and the United States, is part of the week-long 224th meeting in Boston, USA , of the American Chemical Society and will finish on Tuesday 20th August.
