The European Food Safety Authority’s GMO panel and Environmental Working Group has developed a new mathematical model for working out the impact of genetically modified crops on butterflies and moths.

The new model has been published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society - Biological Sciences.

It was developed to look specifically at the impact of pollen from Monsanto’s Bt-maize Mon 810 on butterflies like the European Peacock and the Red Admiral, and the Diamondback moth. Butterflies and moths are ‘non-target’ organisms of Mon 810, which is intended to protect crops from the corn borer pest.
