A once-a-day cholesterol - lowering food may hit the shelves in the future, reports US paper The Des Moines Register.
. Doug Lewis, an associate professor at www.iastate.edu >Iowa State University has developed a product made from a concentrated source of plant sterols. According to the author of the study the food only needs to be eaten once a day to help lower cholesterol.
Plant sterols are the plant equivalent of the cholesterol found in meat, milk and eggs and have been shown to reduce cholesterol in human blood. High cholesterol has been blamed for causing health problems, including heart attacks.
"I like the idea of 'vegetabilizing' the food system, especially eggs, milk and meat," Lewis said. "Why not transfer the benefits of the vegetarian diet to theomnivore diet?"
