The sucralose enhancer, dubbed S2383, was first introduced in the United States in 2007 as a way to reduce sucralose in reduced sugar products by up to 75%, thereby reducing formulation costs without sacrificing flavour, although they do not have a flavour of their own.
The company’s savoury flavours, on the other hand, are not intended to reduce any particular ingredient – although some mimic the flavour of monosodium glutamate (MSG) – and have characteristic tastes of their own. They can also be used to create new savoury flavour blends.
“The approval of Senomyx’s Savoury Flavours and S2383 in the European Union opens important new markets for these unique flavour ingredients,” said Kent Snyder, CEO of Senomyx.
“The Savoury Flavours are very versatile and can be used in a variety of food products including sauces, frozen foods, cooking aids, soups, and snack foods. S2383 is applicable for use in all food and beverage products sweetened with sucralose.”
The ingredients have all been assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which published a regulation on October 2 allowing usage of the flavours in Europe from late April 2013.
