French food inspectors hit the gourmet shops


France has kicked off its annual pre-Christmas war on substandard gourmet products, targeting inferior chocolate and bogus foie gras. Government inspectors will scour food shop shelves, checking labels and testing delicacies. National rules ban the use of vegetable fat, other than cocoa butter, in chocolate and require makers to put the cocoa percentage on the package. Jerome Galot, head of the consumer protection office, also pledged a crackdown on producers who pump too much fat into lower quality bloc de foie gras, a reconstituted pate, or who sell foie-gras based products that contain very little of the real thing.
