Euro consumer group criticises food supplement regulations

"It is essential for consumer protection to set clear restrictions on the authorisation of food supplements", says the EuropeanCommunity of Consumer Co-operatives (Euro Coop), Europe Agriculture reports this week. While welcoming the European Commission's 8 May proposal for a Directive* on food supplements, the consumer co-operatives warn that supplements can be dangerous if consumedInappropriately and that food supplements should be seen in conjunction with a balanced healthy diet. The co-operatives stress there must be clear restrictions on the authorisation of food supplements at EU level. EuroCoop is concerned about the restrictive scope of the proposed Directive on food The group maintains that given the lack of current European legislation, the Commission has not taken the opportunity to regulate the production and marketing of all nutrients.
