Blueberry pie potato chips and chia wraps: Snack launches to look out for at ISM

BakeryAndSnacks looks at some of the novel snacking products that are bound to catch visitors’ attention.

All eyes are on Cologne as ISM (January 29 – February 1 at Koelnmesse) gears up to open its doors in less than a week.

The show will be held conjunction with ProSweets, an ingredients, processing and packaging fair for the sweets and snacks industry.

John & John Handcooked Chips

Hand picked

British potato chip startup John & John - owned by German company Market Grounds - will exhibit a range of GMO-free and gluten-free products at ISM.

After being washed and thickly sliced, John & John crisps are fried in pure sunflower oil and, while still warm, lavished in spices and packaged to capture the crisp freshness.

Available in five flavors, including Deep Blue Sea Salt, Sweet Chili & Red Pepper, Aspall Cyder Vinegar, Suffolk Cheddar & Chives and Sea Salt & Black Pepper, as well as a Mixed Roots bag, containing parsnips, carrots and beetroot refined with a pinch of sea salt.

Gluten-free and vegan, the crisps use non-GMO vegetables, contain no artificial flavors or colors and are preservative free.

Lorenz Naturals

Honestly good

Naturals, from Lorenz Bahlsen Snack-world, is a range of crisps that will appeal to the nutrition-conscious, quality-driven consumer who wants complete transparency.

 The Naturals range from the chip, pretzel and cracker producer has earned its name, using carefully selected ingredients that don’t contain artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The latest flavor in the line-up is Parmesan, the authentic taste of Italy.

Oatis is a gluten-free wholegrain oat snack from Pyhäntä-based Real Snacks. Made from Finnish oats, the high fiber snack bar comes in three flavors, including sea salt, arrabbiata pesto and blueberry pie. Real Snacks also produces a range of potato crisps with unusual flavors like salty licorice.

Snacking 2.0

Crisbiss Sweets & Snacks is a young, up-and-coming company from Dahlen in Nordsachsen that recreates old Dutch and German traditions in forms that benefits today’s adventurous snacker.

Waffleballs

Their latest product offering from Cheese Garden are light and crispy Waffleball spheres housing creamy cheese fillings, in variants including smoky ham, Roquefort, gouda and chilli.

PanFruttelle

Another innovative product from crissbiss captivates the consumer’s penchant for combining sweet and salty tones.

Panfruitelle is a salty wholemeal flatbread studded with whole pieces of cranberry, wholesome, hearty and healthful in one bite.

Bagels Italian-style

Mr Tarallino Classico

Terre di Puglia produces Apulian-style products using only the extra virgin olive oil cultivar “coratina”, the basis of typical dishes from this region.

Such as the range of Mr Tarallino baked bagel biscuits, a traditional southern Italian snack that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Available in 35 g pack including classico, bacon and sesame; and the 250 g multipack.

Protein powerhouse

Pea protein snack

PaPis, an interesting newcomer to the snack arena, are protein crisps made from superfoods like pea, quinoa and dried vegetables, flavored with fresh herbs and exotic spices.

They are definitely up there for snackers who want something satisfying and nutritious, high in protein and fiber that are vegan and gluten-free.

Mexico on the move

Chia wraps

Denmark food corporation Leighton Foods is a Tex-Mex specialist and will be exhibiting an extensive stable of the South American flavours and snacks like tortilla chips, taco shells, dips and sauces.

It’s latest offering, Chia Wraps, are 100% preservative-free and high in fiber, protein and omega 3s.

Artica Cantina Snack to go

Another convenient grab-and-go snack is its Chip & Dip, a handy 100 g pack of tortilla chips with an accompanying salsa or cheese dip.
