Interest in milk alternatives is growing due to concerns about dairy allergies and a desire for alternative protein sources and additional nutritional benefits. We’ve seen nut milk, oat milk and even rice milk, but the leading dairy-free alternative to milk from ruminants is soy.

Didier Videau, development director from Roquette’s Nutrition Business Unit says this could change in time, as Roquette presents a pea-protein based milk alternative to clients at HIE 2010. Traditionally, pea protein has been criticised for its ‘off’ taste, but Videau explains that the VegBoost concept uses “breakthrough” technology to counter this, and is non-GM, non-allergenic and high in fibre.

Using pea protein for people with milk allergies

Allergy to pea protein is a growing problem, particularly in Scandinavia. Related legumes eg peanut, soy and lupin have already been identified as key allergens requiring specific labelling and allergen risk management / control throughout Europe. We are learning from the example of wheat isolates that processing methods can change the allergy status of apparently ordinary foods, and a full assessment needs to made of any food targeted at high risk food allergic individuals.
