Henk Kamp, the Netherlands Minister of Economic Affairs, has given €130m ($155m) SDE+ (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production) subsidy to Cooperative Jumpstart for the installation of 103 manure monofermentation systems at dairy farms.

As a founder of Cooperative Jumpstart, FrieslandCampina said the initiative will make a contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions and the company’s objective of climate-neutral growth by 2020.

Cooperative Jumpstart currently has 68 eligible dairy farmers.

The other SDE+ subsidies will be assigned in the order of registration of new prospective members.

Currently, different types of manure monofermentation systems are used that correspond to the size of farm.

Cooperative Jumpstart membership is not restricted to FrieslandCampina member farmers.

Manure monofermentation

Manure monofermentation contributes to the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases in two ways: by reducing the methane volume and by generating ‘green’ energy.

Besides use at the dairy farms themselves, part of the energy generated will be used to meet the electricity demand of FrieslandCampina production locations and offices in the Netherlands.

The 103 systems will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by more than 70,000 tons of CO2.

Climate-neutral growth in 2020

FrieslandCampina said the cooperative’s aim is to achieve climate-neutral growth and reduce the use of natural resources such as water, raw materials and fossil fuels.

It said the company wants to generate sufficient green energy at farms to fully cover the use of electricity within the chain and make a contribution to achieving the objective of climate-neutral growth by 2020.

In order to reach this goal, FrieslandCampina has, apart from manure monofermentation, also started initiatives with solar panels, geothermal energy and energy savings.

FrieslandCampina also stimulates the production of green energy by offering dairy farmers a €10 ($11.91) bonus for each ton reduction of CO2 emission.
