Food justice under spotlight in London

17-Jan-2011

The Food Ethics Council and NEF are hosting a conference on food justice in London this month, to debate the prospects for a more just food system at a time of public spending cuts, rising unemployment, and climate change concern.

The event, to be held on 31 January, brings together a slate of speakers at the forefront of the food thinking, including Food and Drink Federation chief exec Melanie Leech, new Soil Association director Helen Browning, and the Fairtrade Foundation’s Harriet Lamb.

The recent Food and Fairness Inquiry conducted by the Food Ethics Council found that “injustice is widespread throughout the UK and global food system”, and showed “how a fairer food system is central to achieving wider sustainability and health goals”.

The NEF (New Economics Foundation) also last year published a report called An Inconvenient Sandwich, which examined the hidden costs to society, public health and the environment of convenience foods and takeaways.
