The new rules, which exist in separate forms for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, replace existing national lists of fish species in the amendment to the 2006 legislation to include new species. They are the enactment of two pieces of European legislation: EC 104/2000 and EC 2065/2001.
Although the UK previously enacted these European regulations, there is a need for updates to the list of fish species at regular internals, to ensure accurate and consistent labelling. Not doing so could impact consumer choice, harm the fish industry, and lead to trade barriers.
The new rules for England add 25 new species, amend 12 existing commercial designations, and delete designations for 5 Latin names.
