The UK Food Standards Agency is to draw together a representative group of consumer and food-industry stakeholders with a specific interest in BSE. The group will be asked to draft a report on BSE and sheep for the FSA's Board by March 2002.

The announcement was made by Agency Chair Sir John Krebs at a BSE and Sheep Stakeholder Workshop organised by the FSA in London on Tuesday 18 December to review the current situation.

More than 120 people attended the meeting, including members of the public, and representatives from the food industry, consumer groups, and farming, science and academic communities.

A panel discussion was also held and contributions taken from the floor. The panelists were: Sir John Krebs, Peter Smith, Sue Davies, Human BSE Foundation Chair Lester Firkins, President of the British Meat Federation David Maunder, veterinary surgeon Jill Nute and John Thorley from the National Sheep Association.
