The United States was cited as saying on Thursday that China failed to provide scientific evidence to support Beijing's new rules onbio-engineered foods that could threaten to bring billions of dollars worth of annual US farm exports to a standstill, according to a Reuters story.
But, the story adds, the Bush administration said it would continue to work with China to clarify its rules on genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.
US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Agriculture Secretary AnnVeneman were quoted as saying in a joint statement: "China has notpresented any science to support these regulations. The result could be ahalt in exports of (US) farm products. This is an unacceptable situation."
One official who attended talks in Beijing said Chinese authorities hadassured a US team there that the new food safety measures were not toimpede trade.
