All additives approved before 20 January 2009 are to be subject to a review, as some were approved as long as 30 years ago and the state of the science has moved on since then. The assessment of food colours is currently underway, and EFSA prioritised the so-called Southampton Six azo dyes which had been implicated in hyperactivity in children. (It adjusted the ADI for some, but for reasons other than hyperactivity).
Emulsifiers, stabilisers and gelling agents are the next category of additives up for review after colours.
