Five new cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) were announced this week by the Department of Agriculture in Ireland bringing the number of cases to 43 for the month of January.
The youngest animal detected last week was a six-year-old in a dairy herd in Cork. To date, no animals born after 1996 have been found with BSE and there has been a declining number of younger animals detected in the past two years.
In July 2000 testing of all casualty and fallen cattle was initiated and since January 2001 all cattle over 30 months are tested. Almost 630,000 tests were carried out in 2001 and 77,000 tests have been carried out this year to date.
