Innocent innocent on five-a-day claim

Complaints over an advert from Innocent that claimed one glass of smoothie counts for two portions of fruit and veg have not been upheld by the Advertising Standards Agency.

An ad that aired in the UK said that one 250ml glass of the drink accounts for two of the five recommended portions of fruit and veg a day.

However seven viewers complained that a smoothie should only count as one, regardless of how much someone drinks.

Innocent countered that it had worked with the Department of Health on five-a-day guidance for smoothies, and nutritionalists had established that the smoothies could be counted as two portions. The drinks contain all edible parts of the pulped fruit and do not contain a dairy product.

“We therefore did not object to the claim and concluded the ad was not misleading.”
