UK Secretary of State Margaret Beckett will lead a delegation of DEFRA Ministers to an international conference on foot and mouth disease being held in Brussels next week.

The UK and Dutch Governments initiated the event earlier this year and are co-sponsors along with the Belgian Government and the European Commission.

The aim of the conference is to bring together leading experts from across the world on both the control of foot and mouth disease and its wider effects on society.

UK Animal Health Minister Elliot Morley said: "Foot and mouth has been a traumatic episode for UK and I am determined that lessons should be learned for the future. The effects of the disease have been disastrous for farming, the wider economy and many different parts of society.

"This conference will ensure that leading experts will be able to pool their expertise and debate how foot and mouth disease should be approached in the future."

The conference is being held in Brussels on December 12 and 13.
