US food manufacturers and restaurant industry professionals are to gather at The Food Safety Summit in Washington, DC from 13 -15 March to discuss how to protect the country's food supplies from the threat of bioterrorism.
Tom Ridge, White House Director of Homeland Security, will address food industry executives on their role in ensuring safe and continuous food supplies. Also speaking at the Summit will be Dr Lester Crawford, appointed just days ago as Deputy Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
In the wake of 11 September, the Food Safety Summit has added new security-related topics dealing with the possible risks to the food supply. Topics will include: protecting food facilities and products from the risks of tampering; preventing food product contamination; assessing threats; and emergency response measures for food facilities.
In addition, the Summit will include sessions on guarding against such risks as E-coli, salmonella, and other food borne illnesses. The summit will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC, on 13-15 March 2002.
"The food industry has been very proactive in responding to the new challenges of homeland defence," said John R. Cady, president and CEO of the National Food Processors Association, co-sponsor of the Food Safety Summit.
According to the summit organisers150 companies will exhibit the latest food safety products and services, including new technologies in food testing, contamination detection, sampling, sanitation.
