The UK Food Standards Agency this week welcomed the final agreement on Monday by the European Council of Ministers to set up a new high profile European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
The FSA stressed that the measures introduced will reinforce existing consumer protection and should help re-establish consumer confidence in the food chain in Europe.
The European Food Safety Authority will be a watchdog setting EU-wide food safety standards and monitoring their application, EU officials said.
The agency will be located in Brussels for now, due to the failure of E.U. leaders at a mid-December summit to agree on a permanent home. The majority of E.U. nations agreed to put the agency in Helsinki, Finland, but Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi vetoed that saying he wants it in the central Italian city of Parma.
The creation of the EFSA fulfills a key objective in the Commission's White Paper on Food Safety.
