Europe lifts restrictions on FMD areas in UK

The Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC) of the European Commission on Wednesday voted in favour of a European Commission proposal to lift the restrictions still applying in the county of Northumberland (United Kingdom) because of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

All restrictions will be removed for the whole of the UK for the export of products from FMD susceptible animals and for the export of live porcine and bovine animals because of FMD.

However, the export of live ovine and caprine animals remains prohibited from the whole UK and the export of live bovine animals remains banned because of BSE measures.

On classical swine fever (CSF) in Spain, the SVC accepted a proposal to allow, under strict conditions, pigs to be brought from holdings located in the protection and surveillance zones to the slaughterhouse and to commercialise the meat from those animals after heat treatment. This will alleviate welfare problems, due to the prolonged standstill of pigs in holdings in the CSF protection and surveillance zones. The two proposals will now be adopted by the Commission in the next few days.
