The European Commission has adopted a green paper that looks at standards, quality and certification schemes, with a view to using quality as a ‘weapon’ against competing products from outside the bloc.
The paper is intended to open debate on how farmers can make the most of their quality produce.
"In an increasingly competitive world, European farmers need to play to their major strength – quality," said Mariann Fischer Boel, commissioner for agriculture and rural development.
