The European Union has pledged to review existing limits placed on Thai rice and tapioca later this year, according to Thai Commerce Minister Adisai Bodharamikm, the Bangkok Post reports.
Adisai met Franz Fischler, the EU Commissioner for fisheries and agriculture, and Pascal Lamy, the trade Commissioner, in Brussels this week to discuss trade issues.
Thailand wants the EU to increase the quota for Thai rice imports, which currently stands at 21,455 tons a year. Shipments outside of the quotas are taxed at 20,000 baht (US$ 457) a ton, higher than the actual price.
Thailand sought privileges similar to those extended to India and Pakistan. Bodharamikm added that he was heartened by statements made by EU officials that a review of the quotas would be made by mid-year.
