The European food and drink industry this week confirmed its support of the new EU Food Law and the European Food Safety Authority which came into effect this week.

The EU Confederation of Food and Drink Industries, (CIAA), announced that they were happy with the adoption of the EFSA by the Agriculture Council and that they intend to co-operate constructively once the authority is effectively in place.

The European food and drink industry is the EU's largest industrial sector, one of its main employers and a major exporter.

With the last part of the White Paper on Food Law complete, there will be pressure to begin the administrative process. The CIAA is hoping that nominations to the management board of the EFSA will take place as soon as possible, and will reflect the diversity of the food industry.

For this next stage, it urged European institutions to maintain the same spirit of conciliation, co-operation and effectiveness as has prevailed during the legislative process.

Based in Brussels, the CIAA represents the food and drink industry in Europe.
