EFSA delay Aspartame review findings until 2013

The European Commission has agreed to extend the timeline for the full re-evaluation of aspartame to May 2013, at the request of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

EFSA said the extension will also allow sufficient time its scientific experts to consider new data and complete its comprehensive risk assessment, as well as to publicly consult on their draft opinion prior to its final adoption.

In May 2011, EFSA was asked by the European Commission to bring forward the full re-evaluation of the safety of aspartame (E 951) to 2012.

The review was previously planned for completion by 2020 – as part of aq systematic re-evaluation of all food additives authorised in the EU prior to 20 January 2009 – as projected under Regulation EU 257/2010.
